Artist. Author.
Inmate. Nerd.
Introducing David J Meister.
David Meister is a self-taught artist and writer currently serving a life sentence in Idaho. Born in the Bay Area in 1983 and raised between California, Seattle, and rural Idaho, David’s creative instincts emerged early — drawing comic book characters, painting with Bob Ross on PBS, and tattooing friends by thirteen.
Incarcerated since age nineteen, David has spent over two decades building a body of work that fuses raw emotion, sharp intellect, and gritty humor. He’s written legal guides for fellow inmates, developed a sci-fi tabletop RPG designed for life behind bars (no dice required), and continues to produce bold, intricate artwork with limited materials and limitless imagination.
David’s life is not defined by his sentence, but by what he’s made of it: creativity, discipline, curiosity — and a deep belief in art (in all forms) as rebellion and survival.
Read his work. See his world.
Every book and piece of art is a record of a life made under conditions most never face.
